For June 5th 2022
Unveiling of Historical Monument to recognize unmarked graves
Christ Church Cemetery, Dartmouth
Dartmouth— For June 5th 2022 — On June 5th a partnership between Christ Church, Dartmouth and Victoria Road United Baptist churches will take place with the unveiling of a memorial stone to recognize eight deceased members of the black community whose remains were buried in 1977 in an unmarked grave. These members of Victoria Road United Baptist Church and the surrounding neighbourhood of the Avenue were returned following their discovery during the development of the Mic Mac Mall area.
“This partnership has allowed both church communities to learn more about each other and properly recognize members of the community who have passed away. I also think it sends a message to the community that we still have much learning and discovery to do in terms of racial justice in Nova Scotia” said Rev. Dr. Kyle Wagner, Rector of Christ Church, Dartmouth.
Rev. Emmanuel Mutale, Pastor of Victoria Road United Baptist Church believes that the knitting of Victoria Road United Baptist and Christ Church churches in this project, serves as a demonstration that Christian communities can bond under the umbrella of their Saviour Jesus Christ without being artificially divided by denominational barriers. This two-church project further brings out this truth, we Christian believers should be the first to show the preciousness of all life and the value God attaches to each individual human life.
Event Details:
On June 5th a combined worship service will take place at Victoria Road United Baptist Church at 36 NS-322, Dartmouth, NS at 11:00am. Following the service, an unveiling and dedication of the memorial monument at Christ Church, Dartmouth Cemetery, will take place, and a reception to follow at Christ Church parish hall at 61 Dundas Street. All in the community are welcome to celebrate in this significant event in the life of downtown Dartmouth. Both Christ Church and Victoria Road United Baptist Church are thankful for the support of councillor Sam Austin and the City of HRM that has made this possible through the Municipal Community Grants Program.
